Marvel cards before Topps
Donruss Marvel Super Heroes from 1966 is considered the first card series featuring Marvel's heroes, 66 cards with eleven each for Captain America, Iron Man, Daredevil, Spider-Man, Hulk and Thor. Impel Marvel Universe from 1990, with 162 cards, became the model for the comic character cards that followed, and the backs gave the character's real name, power ratings and first appearance.
Marvel Masterpieces began in 1992 at SkyBox, and all 100 cards in the first series were portraits painted by Joe Jusko. During the 1990s Marvel itself owned two card companies, Fleer from 1992 and SkyBox from 1995, until both were sold in 1999 after Marvel's bankruptcy. From 2007 Marvel Masterpieces was published by Upper Deck. The later history of the licence and Topps' own Marvel series are covered in the guide to entertainment cards.
